Seeing the smalltooth sawfish deaths in the news recently brought me back to a chance encounter I had last year in the Florida Keys with this ultra-rare species. As I walked along the beach at sunrise, I was aghast to find a juvenile sawfish was wading in the shallow, murky, ankle-deep water along a mangrove beach. It was a nearly impossible shot to capture with my small wet lens, yet I knew I had to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with this bucket list species. I quite awkwardly held my camera tilted at just the right angle to avoid too much water getting behind my wet lens, while squatting gently next to the little animal. I slowly and cautiously crept in close enough to finally be able to get the frame I was pleased with, without causing too much disturbance to the animal. I was fortunate it seemed relaxed in my presence without any other beachgoers in the water. The effort was well worth it, knowing I documented a rare species for all to appreciate.
