El art\u00edculo \u201cEscafandras de buceo hist\u00f3ricas\u201d (Historic Dive Helmets) de la edici\u00f3n del segundo trimestre de 2024 de Alert Diver<\/em> trajo recuerdos de mi padre, Burton Stewart, y su mejor amigo Leno Prestini. En 1935 fabricaron su propio equipo de buceo a partir de un calentador de agua, una lata de leche, mangueras de jard\u00edn y material para globos Goodyear para los trajes. Entre 1935 y 1936, realizaron muchos buceos de forma autodidacta en los lagos del noreste de Washington, para lo que utilizaron sus trajes con un sistema de bombeo de aire casero y un tel\u00e9fono de dos v\u00edas, generalmente sumergi\u00e9ndose a 27 metros (90 pies).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despu\u00e9s de que mi pap\u00e1 contrajo matrimonio en 1946, \u00e9l y Leno siguieron siendo buenos amigos mientras viv\u00edan en Clayton, Washington. Despu\u00e9s de mi nacimiento en 1947, mi pap\u00e1 se convirti\u00f3 en un hombre de familia, y Leno continu\u00f3 su carrera art\u00edstica con un estudio local, pero a\u00fan buceaban de vez en cuando. Mi pap\u00e1 tuvo su escafandra de buceo colgando de una rama en nuestro patio delantero hasta su fallecimiento. Hoy en d\u00eda, la escafandra y los zapatos que cre\u00f3 est\u00e1n en la vieja escuela de la Sociedad Hist\u00f3rica de Loon Lake.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mi pap\u00e1 pod\u00eda crear, construir y hacer casi cualquier cosa, y ahora me doy cuenta de que observarlo y trabajar con \u00e9l influy\u00f3 en mi decisi\u00f3n de convertirme en ingeniero mec\u00e1nico. Al crecer rodeado de sus historias, im\u00e1genes y artefactos, obtuve mi esp\u00edritu aventurero de \u00e9l y Leno. Mi pap\u00e1 era un hombre paciente y apacible que nunca se jact\u00f3 de sus experiencias; era una persona que transmit\u00eda su sentido de la aventura mediante sus acciones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Despu\u00e9s de graduarme de la universidad y conseguir un trabajo, me convert\u00ed en piloto privado y aprend\u00ed a hacer rafting en aguas bravas y a bucear con aire comprimido. Mi pap\u00e1 siempre se interesaba en mis actividades. Despu\u00e9s de que obtuve mi habilitaci\u00f3n de instructor de vuelo, tom\u00f3 lecciones de vuelo conmigo, a pesar de tener m\u00e1s de 70 a\u00f1os. Cuando ten\u00eda m\u00e1s de 80 a\u00f1os, esquiaba cuesta abajo y hac\u00eda rafting en el r\u00edo Salm\u00f3n en Idaho conmigo, mi esposa y mi hermana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
