El coral prospera en aguas c\u00e1lidas, cristalinas y pobres en nutrientes, mientras que las algas marinas viven en aguas fr\u00edas y ricas en nutrientes, que suelen ser turbias debido a esos mismos nutrientes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El coral necesita herb\u00edvoros como el pez loro para protegerse de las algas, mientras que las algas marinas son, en s\u00ed mismas, algas y necesitan depredadores que las protejan de herb\u00edvoros como los erizos de mar. Ambos son lugares maravillosos para bucear, aunque hay que intentar no tocar los arrecifes de coral; sin embargo, nadar a trav\u00e9s de un denso bosque de algas marinas puede ser un deporte de contacto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Las algas marinas proporcionan unos 500 000 millones de d\u00f3lares en servicios al a\u00f1o, desde la producci\u00f3n de marisco hasta la protecci\u00f3n contra las tormentas, y \u2014junto con las praderas marinas y los manglares\u2014 generan el 20 % de nuestro ox\u00edgeno. Las disminuciones hist\u00f3ricas se han relacionado con la p\u00e9rdida de nutrias marinas, langostas y peces de gran tama\u00f1o \u2014los depredadores de los erizos que se alimentan de algas marinas y otros herb\u00edvoros\u2014 debido a la caza, la pesca, la contaminaci\u00f3n provocada por la expansi\u00f3n urbana costera y la recolecci\u00f3n silvestre para obtener alginato, que se encuentra en las paredes celulares de las algas marinas y se utiliza como emulsionante y aglutinante en alimentos, cosm\u00e9ticos y otros productos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La recolecci\u00f3n silvestre est\u00e1 contribuyendo a la p\u00e9rdida de algas marinas en el norte de Chile y el sur de Per\u00fa, donde bandas criminales arrancan lechos enteros de algas marinas para satisfacer la demanda del mercado negro de exportaciones de alginato a China. Las disminuciones hist\u00f3ricas se deben a ciclos de calentamiento, como el fuerte fen\u00f3meno de El Ni\u00f1o de 1957, que redujo los lechos de algas de Point Loma, en San Diego (California), de 15 000 a 150 acres (de 6 070 a 60,7 hect\u00e1reas).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A principios de la d\u00e9cada de 1960, un recolector comercial de algas marinas verti\u00f3 cal viva sobre los erizos de mar que hab\u00edan sustituido al bosque marino de Point Loma, quem\u00e1ndolos junto con todo lo dem\u00e1s que hab\u00eda en el fondo marino. Un estudio de 2026 realizado por cient\u00edficos de la Administraci\u00f3n Nacional Oce\u00e1nica y Atmosf\u00e9rica (NOAA) y de otras instituciones revel\u00f3 que el oc\u00e9ano absorbi\u00f3 m\u00e1s calor en 2025 que nunca antes, lo que desencaden\u00f3 un n\u00famero r\u00e9cord de olas de calor marinas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Una ola de calor marina en 2010 azot\u00f3 Tasmania, frente a la costa sur de Australia, sin apenas efectos. El fortalecimiento de la corriente del este de Australia desde la d\u00e9cada de 1990 ya hab\u00eda tra\u00eddo aguas m\u00e1s c\u00e1lidas y larvas de erizos de mar de espinas largas a la isla, arrasando con el 95 % de sus algas gigantes. En la costa occidental de Australia, esa misma ola de calor provoc\u00f3 que 60 millas (96,6 kil\u00f3metros) de bosque de algas marinas se convirtieran en algas filamentosas, que comenzaron a llenarse de peces loro y corales j\u00f3venes a medida que el agua pasaba de ser templada a tropical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A partir de 2013, una enorme ola de calor marina azot\u00f3 la costa oeste de Norteam\u00e9rica, debilitando las algas marinas y potenciando una enfermedad degenerativa de las estrellas de mar causada por bacterias. El fen\u00f3meno de El Ni\u00f1o de 2014 empeor\u00f3 a\u00fan m\u00e1s una situaci\u00f3n ya de por s\u00ed grave. Las enormes y \u00e1giles estrellas de mar girasol, los \u00fanicos depredadores de erizos morados que quedaban en el norte de California y el sur de Oreg\u00f3n, se redujeron a aproximadamente el 1 % de su poblaci\u00f3n anterior. Estos crust\u00e1ceos se alimentan con gusto de los campos de mejillones, navajas y erizos verdes, lo que contribuye a la restauraci\u00f3n natural de las algas marinas en los fondos marinos libres de herb\u00edvoros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">M\u00e1s al norte, en el archipi\u00e9lago de Svalbard, en el Oc\u00e9ano \u00c1rtico, los extensos y saludables lechos de algas, principalmente de tipo \u00abwinged kelp\u00bb, se han quintuplicado a lo largo de la costa occidental, a medida que el calentamiento de las aguas ha reducido la capa de hielo. Sin embargo, dado que el \u00c1rtico se est\u00e1 calentando entre tres y cuatro veces m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido que el resto del planeta, la grava, la arena, el \u00ab \u00bb y el lodo procedentes de los glaciares en retroceso podr\u00edan amenazar con sepultar esta nueva frontera mundial de las algas en los pr\u00f3ximos a\u00f1os. Bucea por ella mientras puedas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al viajar y bucear para mi nuevo libro, <em>Forest of the Sea: The Remarkable Life and Imperiled Future of Kelp<\/em>(El bosque del mar: la extraordinaria vida y el futuro en peligro de las algas marinas), me di cuenta de que las r\u00e1pidas tasas de crecimiento y la dispersi\u00f3n natural de esporas a distancias mayores de lo que los cient\u00edficos cre\u00edan anteriormente son fundamentales para los esfuerzos globales de restauraci\u00f3n de las algas marinas.
