Pasan la mayor parte de su vida bajo el agua y s\u00f3lo salen a la superficie para respirar. En cambio, los humanos est\u00e1n adaptados a la vida en una atm\u00f3sfera seca y s\u00f3lo pueden sumergirse brevemente mientras aguantan la respiraci\u00f3n. Con los aparatos de respiraci\u00f3n subacu\u00e1tica aut\u00f3noma (SCUBA), los humanos pueden prolongar considerablemente su estancia bajo el agua. Ya sea con una sola respiraci\u00f3n o con escafandra aut\u00f3noma, el buceo implica factores de estr\u00e9s derivados de las modificaciones en la respiraci\u00f3n, la inmersi\u00f3n en el agua y los cambios de presi\u00f3n a medida que el buceador se desplaza verticalmente en el agua. Para los buceadores en forma y bien entrenados, el estr\u00e9s del buceo es positivo y provoca adaptaciones espont\u00e1neas sin que los buceadores sean conscientes de ello.  Esto hace que bucear sea una experiencia relajada y agradable.
