EN TANT QUE SENIOR \u00c0 L'UNIVERSIT\u00c9<\/strong>, I signed up for a series of courses in Florida\u2019s cave country to become a certified cave diver. I had been enrolled in a collegiate-level scuba program for two years and wanted to expand my dive experience to overhead environments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I arrived to start my training, I was assigned a buddy I had just met who already had an introductory cave-diving certification. I brought my new sidemount configuration and regulator set, all of which I had used on 10 shallow-water dives to ensure the equipment\u2019s functionality prior to the start of class. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cela a permis de maintenir la position de l'\u00e9quipe pour l'exercice, car le plongeur qui a perdu l'air est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement devant lors de la sortie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lors d'une plong\u00e9e en configuration sidemount, les plongeurs doivent g\u00e9rer ind\u00e9pendamment le volume de gaz respirable dans chaque bouteille. Une r\u00e9partition in\u00e9gale du gaz peut amener les plongeurs \u00e0 rouler sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 et \u00e0 perdre le contr\u00f4le de leur flottabilit\u00e9. Il est essentiel de maintenir une quantit\u00e9 minimale de gaz respirable dans chaque bouteille pour garantir une sortie r\u00e9ussie du point le plus \u00e9loign\u00e9 de la p\u00e9n\u00e9tration dans la grotte. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

J'ai commenc\u00e9 la plong\u00e9e en utilisant mon tuyau long connect\u00e9 \u00e0 la bouteille de mon c\u00f4t\u00e9 droit et j'ai chang\u00e9 pour le tuyau court de la bouteille de mon c\u00f4t\u00e9 gauche au moment appropri\u00e9 dans le profil de la plong\u00e9e pour maintenir l'\u00e9quilibre. Mon instructeur venait \u00e0 mes c\u00f4t\u00e9s et se trouvait juste au point de l'explosion, qui l'a frapp\u00e9 sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la t\u00eate et l'a d\u00e9sorient\u00e9 momentan\u00e9ment et lui a donn\u00e9 le vertige. Tous ceux qui ont assist\u00e9 de pr\u00e8s \u00e0 l'\u00e9clatement d'un ballon ou au d\u00e9clenchement de la soupape de d\u00e9charge d'un compresseur connaissent cette sensation et peuvent l'imaginer amplifi\u00e9e sous l'eau. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

C'\u00e9tait la premi\u00e8re fois que je devais vraiment utiliser ces comp\u00e9tences, mais la m\u00e9moire musculaire n\u00e9cessaire pour r\u00e9agir \u00e0 ce type de situation \u00e9tait profond\u00e9ment ancr\u00e9e, quelle que soit la configuration de mon \u00e9quipement. I remained in position to ensure my instructor regained his equilibrium, which he quickly did. My buddy, who was wearing a thick 10 mm hood, didn\u2019t hear the explosion of bubbles and continued kicking for about 50 feet until he checked for my light and realized I wasn\u2019t behind him. He turned around and headed back toward us. My instructor asked if I was OK. I returned the signal and gave him the dreaded thumb, which indicates the dive is over and to head directly to the surface, whereas a turn signal to turn a dive would\u2019ve meant that the cave penetration is over, all is well, and we could poke around and meander on the way back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When my buddy arrived, I begrudgingly gave him the thumb as well, pointing to the tank on my left side with my middle finger to indicate it was broken. The dive plan was for me to simulate being out of air anyway, so I signaled as such to my buddy, who eagerly donated his gas because he hadn\u2019t quite realized what was going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the classroom we disassembled my equipment and determined that a high-pressure seat failure had caused the diaphragm to bleed high-pressure gas into the environmental seal, and the bang we heard was the silicone environmental seal extruding from the top of the first stage. The high-pressure seat is the valve mechanism that opens and closes to maintain intermediate pressure. If the seat has a defect, then the valve can\u2019t close properly and the high-pressure gas will leak past the seat and cause a buildup in intermediate pressure. Typically the second stage would relieve this pressure through a freeflow, but in this case the diaphragm itself let go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar near-misses have caused divers of all levels to prematurely leave the sport. I encourage anyone who feels that they don\u2019t have the skills or confidence to safely experience a real out-of-air situation to seek additional training to help build those skills and the confidence to execute them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
