EN TANT QUE PLONGEUR, MON PREMIER CONTR\u00d4LE INSTINCTIF<\/strong> et l'utilisation d'un plan d'action d'urgence s'est produite lors de la premi\u00e8re plong\u00e9e d'un voyage international. Ma femme et moi voyagions ensemble pour une semaine de vacances et avions r\u00e9serv\u00e9 nos plong\u00e9es aupr\u00e8s d'une organisation qui jouissait d'une bonne r\u00e9putation sur les forums et les groupes en ligne, qui disposait de bateaux rapides et de grandes bouteilles de nitrox, et qui r\u00e9partissait les plongeurs en groupes en fonction de leur exp\u00e9rience et de leurs comp\u00e9tences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After arriving on the island on the first day of our trip, we dropped off our gear at the dive shop \u2014 the dive operator was responsible for bringing every diver\u2019s equipment onto the boat each day. While at the shop I met a retired gentleman, who I\u2019ll refer to as John, and we chatted like divers do. In our conversation I discovered he was a regular on the island with hundreds of dives there and was returning after an absence of several months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After having my logbook checked, we said goodbye to him and headed back to the resort, excited for the week of diving and all-inclusive fun ahead of us. This was the only time I\u2019d had my logbook checked while diving internationally, which reinforced my confidence in the dive operator and their reputation. What I didn\u2019t know then was that less than 24 hours later we would witness a diver death and be left at sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le lendemain matin, lors du trajet en bateau vers le site de plong\u00e9e, nous avons retrouv\u00e9 John. Nous avons partag\u00e9 le fait que nous venions de Caroline du Nord et nous avons eu une bonne discussion avec lui sur la plong\u00e9e dans notre r\u00e9gion. Ma femme et moi \u00e9tions partenaires de plong\u00e9e, et deux autres plongeurs formaient le troisi\u00e8me bin\u00f4me sur notre bateau. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00catre \u00e0 la d\u00e9rive en pleine mer et voir son bateau de plong\u00e9e dispara\u00eetre est tout d'abord terrifiant. D'autres bateaux se trouvaient \u00e0 proximit\u00e9, mais nous verraient-ils si nous \u00e9tions en d\u00e9tresse ? Ou bien irions-nous \u00e0 la d\u00e9rive pour ne plus jamais \u00eatre vus ?<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Nous avons \u00e9cout\u00e9 le briefing de routine concernant les courants en profondeur (il s'agissait apr\u00e8s tout d'une plong\u00e9e d\u00e9rivante) et avons appris que les courants avaient chang\u00e9 et que les conditions du site \u00e9taient impr\u00e9visibles depuis quelques jours. Les cinq d'entre nous et notre divemaster se sont pr\u00e9par\u00e9s et ont plong\u00e9 sur un site profond bien connu pour ses grandes et belles travers\u00e9es coralliennes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On descent we found that the current was fast and changing directions throughout the water column. This wasn\u2019t my first time drift diving, but it was my first time experiencing currents this intense. The only shelter we could find from the constantly shifting conditions was within the large swim-throughs. My big blade fins were barely able to push me up a sand hill between two swim-throughs, and the current blasting down the hill toward me felt akin to being sandblasted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I made it to the second swim-through, I knew I was overworking myself and felt a bit gassed at that point. John noticed that my wife\u2019s fin strap had come loose and swam over to get her attention and help her with it. Our group then entered another swim-through and upon exiting started moving up to a shallower part of the reef, hoping to encounter less current.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En remontant vers la zone suivante, j'ai vu du coin de l'\u0153il que John se d\u00e9battait et semblait en d\u00e9tresse. Il se trouvait \u00e0 une quinzaine de pieds en dessous de moi, un peu dans le sens du courant, et se tenait la poitrine en essayant de nager vers le divemaster. Ce dernier a imm\u00e9diatement lib\u00e9r\u00e9 sa bou\u00e9e de surface (SMB), nous a fait signe \u00e0 tous de remonter et a donn\u00e9 un grand coup de pied tout en nageant vers l'homme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collectivement, nous nous trouvions \u00e0 environ 60 pieds de profondeur et le groupe \u00e9tait dispers\u00e9. Il \u00e9tait difficile de lutter contre le courant, mais le divemaster a fini par rejoindre John et ils ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 remonter ensemble. J'ai rel\u00e2ch\u00e9 mon SMB et j'ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 remonter \u00e0 mon tour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le troisi\u00e8me couple de plongeurs s'est s\u00e9par\u00e9 en essayant d'aider le divemaster. L'un des plongeurs a rejoint le divemaster et a aid\u00e9 John \u00e0 remonter \u00e0 la surface, tandis que l'autre est rest\u00e9 en bas avec moi et ma femme. Lorsque nous sommes remont\u00e9s tous les trois \u00e0 la surface, le bateau de plong\u00e9e s'est approch\u00e9 du directeur de plong\u00e9e et l'autre plongeur l'a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 faire monter John sur le bateau. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malgr\u00e9 le courant de surface, le bateau a \u00e9t\u00e9 charg\u00e9 rapidement, et il n'a fallu que deux minutes pour embarquer les trois plongeurs. Avant de d\u00e9coller, le capitaine nous a cri\u00e9 de ne pas bouger et qu'un autre bateau viendrait nous chercher. Nous avons regard\u00e9 notre bateau de plong\u00e9e dispara\u00eetre au loin, tandis que John, d\u00e9sormais inconscient, recevait des soins de r\u00e9animation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00catre \u00e0 la d\u00e9rive en pleine mer et voir son bateau de plong\u00e9e dispara\u00eetre est tout d'abord terrifiant. Aucun bateau n'\u00e9tait assez proche pour nous entendre crier \u00e0 l'aide en cas d'urgence. De plus, il aurait fallu nager tr\u00e8s longtemps pour atteindre la rive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

J'ai d\u00e9couvert que sur les trois personnes rest\u00e9es dans l'eau, j'\u00e9tais le seul plongeur \u00e0 disposer d'un \u00e9quipement de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 ou de signalisation. J'emporte toujours une bou\u00e9e de surface retard\u00e9e DAN (DSMB), un miroir et un sifflet. Ma femme poss\u00e8de \u00e9galement cet \u00e9quipement, mais elle avait oubli\u00e9 d'apporter le sien au magasin de plong\u00e9e lorsque nous avions d\u00e9pos\u00e9 notre mat\u00e9riel la veille. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous avons tous les trois eu beaucoup de temps pour discuter pendant que nous attendions pendant 30 minutes \u00e0 la surface qu'un bateau vienne nous chercher. Nous \u00e9tions tous angoiss\u00e9s \u00e0 l'id\u00e9e d'\u00eatre laiss\u00e9s \u00e0 la d\u00e9rive, mais le fait de parler les uns aux autres nous a permis de rester calmes. Un autre bateau du m\u00eame op\u00e9rateur est finalement revenu nous chercher, nous localisant gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 mon DSMB. Nous avons ensuite \u00e9t\u00e9 transf\u00e9r\u00e9s entre deux autres bateaux avant de rejoindre notre bateau d'origine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the quick response and effort from the divemaster and crew, John unfortunately died. Upon cutting open his wetsuit, the crew discovered visible scars from a major heart surgery. Despite John\u2019s many dives with this specific operator in the past, he had not disclosed this recent change in medical history to the dive operation \u2014 he had arrived at the boat that morning already wearing his wetsuit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hiding medical conditions puts not only you at risk, but also other divers in your group. A physician must clear you if there is any speculation regarding your fitness to dive. This incident changed my protocols on any ocean diving. I now carry a PLB personal locator beacon (PLB) on every dive and verify that my dive buddy has proper signaling and safety items. If they don\u2019t have an SMB or any signaling devices, I lend them one of my extras or make them borrow one from the boat. My wife now never gets on a boat without her SMB as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
