Pourtant, cette altitude n\u2019aurait pas suffi face aux puissantes houles g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9es par l\u2019ouragan Helene en 2024 si les vagues du large avaient atteint le rivage. Cela n\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 n\u00e9cessaire : une structure r\u00e9cifale situ\u00e9e \u00e0 7 miles (11 kilom\u00e8tres) au large, \u00e0 Eastern Dry Rocks, a dissip\u00e9 plus de 90 % de l\u2019\u00e9nergie des vagues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab Sans le syst\u00e8me de r\u00e9cif-barri\u00e8re, une grande partie des Keys serait expos\u00e9e de plein fouet \u00e0 la houle oc\u00e9anique \u00bb, explique Jim Hench, professeur associ\u00e9 d\u2019oc\u00e9anographie \u00e0 Duke University et responsable de l\u2019\u00e9tude. \u00ab Mais les r\u00e9cifs, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leur structure complexe et \u00e0 leurs propri\u00e9t\u00e9s de friction, interagissent avec les vagues : ils transforment l\u2019\u00e9nergie de la houle en \u00e9nergie turbulente, puis en chaleur. C\u2019est ce m\u00e9canisme qui assure la dissipation. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Une bou\u00e9e au large, mouill\u00e9e par plus de 300 pieds (91 m) de fond \u00e0 Satan Shoal, \u00e0 8 miles (13 km) au sud-ouest de Eastern Dry Rocks, a enregistr\u00e9 des houles de 19 pieds (5,8 m) lors du passage d\u2019Helene au-dessus des Keys le 26 septembre 2024, alors class\u00e9 ouragan de cat\u00e9gorie 1. L\u2019une des vagues a culmin\u00e9 \u00e0 plus de 32 pieds (9,8 m). Helene fut l\u2019un des quatre ouragans ayant affect\u00e9 les Florida Keys au cours de mois cons\u00e9cutifs cet automne-l\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les chercheurs avaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9tudi\u00e9 la physique de l\u2019att\u00e9nuation de la houle le long de plages plates et sablonneuses, mais peu de travaux avaient appliqu\u00e9 ces th\u00e9ories \u00e0 la topographie abrupte et complexe des r\u00e9cifs coralliens des Keys, en particulier lors d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements extr\u00eames. L\u2019hypoth\u00e8se a \u00e9t\u00e9 confirm\u00e9e rapidement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 2022, l\u2019ouragan Ian a fr\u00f4l\u00e9 les Keys selon une trajectoire offrant des conditions id\u00e9ales pour quantifier le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne. Les flux sont pass\u00e9s de 220 kW\/m sur l\u2019avant-r\u00e9cif \u00e0 moins de 5 kW\/m sur l\u2019arri\u00e8re-r\u00e9cif, soit une r\u00e9duction de 97 %. Des diminutions comparables ont \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9es lors des quatre ouragans de 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ces r\u00e9sultats d\u00e9montrent la puissance de dissipation d\u2019un r\u00e9cif vivant et soulignent l\u2019importance de la restauration dans une \u00e9poque marqu\u00e9e par de multiples d\u00e9fis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\" \u00c0 mesure que les vagues approchent du r\u00e9cif, les mouvements orbitaux de l\u2019eau deviennent extr\u00eamement \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques au contact de la rugosit\u00e9 corallienne \u00bb, explique Hench. \u00ab C\u2019est une configuration id\u00e9ale pour dissiper l\u2019\u00e9nergie de la houle sur une zone relativement restreinte. Cette d\u00e9couverte a des implications majeures pour cibler les zones de restauration afin de maximiser l\u2019att\u00e9nuation : exploiter le moment o\u00f9 les vagues sont les plus \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques et utiliser cette rugosit\u00e9 accrue pour dissiper leur \u00e9nergie. \"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eastern Dry Rocks, sanctuaire marin prot\u00e9g\u00e9, pr\u00e9sente de spectaculaires formations en \u00e9perons et sillons (spur-and-groove) qui ont historiquement abrit\u00e9 d\u2019importants fourr\u00e9s d\u2019Acropora palmata (corail corne d\u2019\u00e9lan) et d\u2019Acropora cervicornis (corail corne de cerf), ainsi que de vastes colonies de corail \u00e9toil\u00e9 massif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\"Les personnes qui plongent l\u00e0-bas sont stup\u00e9faites par l\u2019abondance et la diversit\u00e9 des poissons et de la faune marine qu\u2019elles observent \" t\u00e9moigne Leslie Levis, propri\u00e9taire d\u2019un centre de plong\u00e9e \u00e0 Key West. \" On y voit de tout: des requins, des mur\u00e8nes, des tortues et toutes sortes de poissons. \" Chaque jour durant l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9, son centre emm\u00e8ne entre 15 et 18 plongeurs sur le site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au fil du temps, les coraux constructeurs de r\u00e9cifs \u00e0 Eastern Dry Rocks ont d\u00e9clin\u00e9, mais ils font aujourd\u2019hui l\u2019objet d\u2019une restauration dans le cadre de Mission: Iconic Reefs, initiative pilot\u00e9e par la National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Les m\u00e9thodes traditionnelles consistent \u00e0 immerger les instruments depuis le flanc d\u2019un navire \u00e0 la surface. Une telle approche aurait cependant tr\u00e8s probablement endommag\u00e9 \u00e0 la fois le r\u00e9cif et les capteurs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour ce projet, l\u2019\u00e9quipe a largement recours aux techniques de plong\u00e9e scientifique afin de positionner les capteurs avec pr\u00e9cision, \u00e0 distance des substrats vivants, et de les fixer solidement au fond pour qu\u2019ils r\u00e9sistent aux fortes temp\u00eates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le r\u00e9seau de capteurs n\u00e9cessite \u00e9galement un entretien p\u00e9riodique afin de t\u00e9l\u00e9charger les donn\u00e9es, remplacer les batteries et \u00e9liminer le bio-encrassement. Compte tenu du nombre important de sites \u00e0 couvrir et des restrictions strictes concernant le mouillage au sein du sanctuaire marin, l\u2019\u00e9quipe a eu recours \u00e0 des scooters sous-marins (DPV) afin de rendre le projet r\u00e9alisable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Avec des fen\u00eatres m\u00e9t\u00e9o courtes au large et de nombreux sites et capteurs sous l\u2019eau, les DPV ont chang\u00e9 la donne. Ils nous ont permis d\u2019accomplir un travail que nous n\u2019aurions pas pu r\u00e9aliser autrement \", explique Ben Edmonds, sp\u00e9cialiste de terrain au sein de Mission: Iconic Reefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les donn\u00e9es issues de toutes ces temp\u00eates serviront de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour calculer l\u2019\u00e9volution de la dissipation de l\u2019\u00e9nergie des vagues \u00e0 mesure que Mission: Iconic Reefs restaurera les coraux au cours des 20 prochaines ann\u00e9es. Plus de 11 000 fragments de coraux ont \u00e9t\u00e9 transplant\u00e9s \u00e0 Eastern Dry Rocks durant les cinq premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es du programme, mais la vague de chaleur marine de 2023 a constitu\u00e9 un revers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les responsables de la NOAA ne se d\u00e9couragent pas : la saison actuelle de transplantation pr\u00e9voit la mise en place de milliers de coraux strat\u00e9giquement s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s. Les coraux plant\u00e9s incluent des individus dont la survie et la tol\u00e9rance thermique sont suivies, tout en contribuant \u00e0 la recherche visant \u00e0 identifier des esp\u00e8ces et des g\u00e9notypes r\u00e9silients pour les restaurations futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\" La restauration sera d\u00e9sormais plus cibl\u00e9e \", indique Katey Lesneski, coordinatrice de la recherche et du suivi pour Mission: Iconic Reefs. \" Nous concentrerons nos efforts sur les zones o\u00f9 les coraux ont r\u00e9sist\u00e9 \u00e0 des \u00e9pisodes de stress thermique et nous renforcerons ces populations r\u00e9silientes. Les praticiens int\u00e9greront \u00e9galement davantage d\u2019esp\u00e8ces et de g\u00e9notypes robustes sur d\u2019autres sites. Les r\u00e9cifs coralliens ne se r\u00e9tablissent pas du jour au lendemain, mais une restauration inform\u00e9e et adaptative leur offre une r\u00e9elle chance pour l\u2019avenir. \"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mission: Iconic Reefs envisage d\u2019\u00e9tendre le programme de suivi \u00e0 d\u2019autres sites, en ajoutant des zones t\u00e9moins non restaur\u00e9es ainsi que des stations proches du littoral.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\" \u00c0 plus long terme, l\u2019objectif est d\u2019installer des capteurs depuis le rivage jusqu\u2019au r\u00e9cif \", explique Andy Bruckner, coordinateur de la recherche pour Mission: Iconic Reefs. \" Pour l\u2019instant, nous n\u2019\u00e9tudions que cette premi\u00e8re zone tampon, et les vagues peuvent \u00e0 nouveau se renforcer puisque le vent persiste.
