Pour les scientifiques marins, East Caicos est devenu une raret\u00e9 dans les Cara\u00efbes modernes: un laboratoire naturel. Les r\u00e9cifs se trouvent bien au-del\u00e0 de la port\u00e9e des bateaux de plong\u00e9e journaliers, la mer est souvent agit\u00e9e et l\u2019isolement de l\u2019\u00eele signifie qu\u2019il n\u2019y a ni abri ni services. Mais cet \u00e9loignement est pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment ce qui rend ces r\u00e9cifs si pr\u00e9cieux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une subvention du programme BEST 2.0 (Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Territories of European Overseas) de la Commission europ\u00e9enne, le TCRF a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 16 sites le long de la c\u00f4te nord d\u2019East Caicos en 2018, \u00e9tablissant une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e9cologique pr\u00e9-maladie particuli\u00e8rement rare. Ces premi\u00e8res \u00e9valuations ont r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 certaines des couvertures coralliennes les plus importantes jamais enregistr\u00e9es aux TCI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lorsque la SCTLD a atteint l\u2019archipel en 2019, il est devenu urgent de retourner sur ces m\u00eames r\u00e9cifs. Les donn\u00e9es initiales constituaient un point de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence scientifique essentiel pour mesurer les changements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En raison de la COVID-19, nous n\u2019avons pas pu y retourner en 2020, mais une enqu\u00eate sanitaire men\u00e9e en mars 2021 en collaboration avec le Department of Environment and Coastal Resources des TCI a confirm\u00e9 la pr\u00e9sence de la SCTLD sur les r\u00e9cifs d\u2019East Caicos. Il devenait imp\u00e9ratif d\u2019\u00e9valuer les dommages. C\u2019est ainsi qu\u2019est n\u00e9 RumPowered Research, fruit de l\u2019urgence, de la cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 et, bien s\u00fbr, du rhum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mount Gay, Bambarra et Woody Creek Distillers ont \u00e9t\u00e9 nos premiers commanditaires, et un partenariat avec Explorer Ventures et le <em>Turks and Caicos Explorer II<\/em> a rendu possible le retour sur ces sites. Cette plateforme a permis \u00e0 des chercheurs, \u00e9tudiants et b\u00e9n\u00e9voles form\u00e9s de vivre au large pendant une semaine \u00e0 la fois et d\u2019effectuer des plong\u00e9es r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9es sur des sites \u00e9tudi\u00e9s historiquement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La collaboration avec d\u2019autres projets de recherche consacr\u00e9s aux oiseaux marins et \u00e0 la nidification des tortues apporte un niveau suppl\u00e9mentaire de compr\u00e9hension \u00e0 une histoire encore en cours d\u2019\u00e9criture, faite de changements \u00e9cologiques, de r\u00e9silience et de potentiel de r\u00e9tablissement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-citizen-science-as-a-force-multiplier\">La science citoyenne comme multiplicateur de force<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les exp\u00e9ditions RumPowered Research reposent sur la conviction que la conservation est plus efficace lorsque les gens y participent activement. Les participants font bien plus qu\u2019observer : ils apportent un travail concret, des donn\u00e9es et des capacit\u00e9s logistiques pr\u00e9cieuses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En 2025, six visiteurs sans exp\u00e9rience scientifique ont rejoint notre \u00e9quipe, dont une famille accompagn\u00e9e de leur fille de 16 ans. Les commentaires ont \u00e9t\u00e9 extr\u00eamement positifs. L\u2019un des messages laiss\u00e9s dans le livre d\u2019or r\u00e9sumait parfaitement l\u2019exp\u00e9rience : \u00ab Une exp\u00e9rience unique dans une vie que nous esp\u00e9rons revivre encore et encore ! \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nous essayons de rendre chaque semaine aussi interactive que possible en offrant aux participants une formation sur l\u2019identification des coraux et des poissons, la reconnaissance des maladies et m\u00eame la collecte de donn\u00e9es selon des protocoles de suivi standardis\u00e9s. Les soir\u00e9es sont consacr\u00e9es \u00e0 des discussions en table ronde, des jeux et des projections de films. Chaque soir, un membre de l\u2019\u00e9quipe ou un chercheur invit\u00e9 pr\u00e9sente ses travaux, cr\u00e9ant une formidable plateforme d\u2019\u00e9changes et de r\u00e9flexion. \u00c0 la fin de la semaine, plusieurs participants prennent activement part \u00e0 l\u2019installation des transects et des parcelles d\u2019\u00e9tude, contribuant directement \u00e0 la recherche.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cette structure collaborative accro\u00eet consid\u00e9rablement nos capacit\u00e9s. Lors de l\u2019exp\u00e9dition de 2023, par exemple, sept scientifiques citoyens ont travaill\u00e9 aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de dix chercheurs et de sept membres d\u2019\u00e9quipage pour accomplir ce qui aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 impossible pour une petite organisation non gouvernementale op\u00e9rant seule. Le r\u00e9sultat est un ensemble de donn\u00e9es comparable \u00e0 ceux des grands programmes r\u00e9gionaux de surveillance, mais obtenu gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un mod\u00e8le communautaire qui initie chaque ann\u00e9e de nouvelles personnes \u00e0 la science des r\u00e9cifs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-seeing-change-through-time\">Observer les changements au fil du temps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La possibilit\u00e9 de suivre les tendances d\u2019une ann\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019autre constitue l\u2019un des r\u00e9sultats les plus pr\u00e9cieux du programme RumPowered Research. Gr\u00e2ce au suivi constant de sites r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9s, les donn\u00e9es gagnent en robustesse chaque ann\u00e9e. En 2025, nous avons install\u00e9 trois parcelles photomosa\u00efques de 25 \u00d7 25 m\u00e8tres (82 \u00d7 82 pieds). Plus de 5 000 photographies par parcelle seront assembl\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019un logiciel sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 afin de cr\u00e9er un jumeau num\u00e9rique haute d\u00e9finition de ces zones. Bien que les donn\u00e9es soient encore en cours d\u2019analyse, plusieurs tendances se d\u00e9gagent d\u00e9j\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>L\u2019isolement ne garantit pas la protection.<\/em> East Caicos montre que l\u2019isolement, \u00e0 lui seul, ne peut prot\u00e9ger les \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes marins dans un oc\u00e9an interconnect\u00e9. Le soutien de la flotte Explorer Ventures et de l\u2019\u00e9quipage du <em>Turks and Caicos Explorer II<\/em> joue un r\u00f4le essentiel : assurer la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des op\u00e9rations de plong\u00e9e, soutenir les calendriers scientifiques et adapter les itin\u00e9raires et la logistique aux priorit\u00e9s de recherche. Le navire lui-m\u00eame est stable, spacieux et capable d\u2019atteindre confortablement East Caicos tout en servant de v\u00e9ritable station de recherche flottante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Des chercheurs d\u2019institutions partenaires \u2014 notamment le Turks and Caicos National Trust, la School for Field Studies, la Royal Society for the Protection of Birds et d\u2019autres groupes r\u00e9gionaux \u2014 participent r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement aux exp\u00e9ditions. Ces \u00e9changes entre institutions renforcent la valeur scientifique du projet et garantissent que les donn\u00e9es contribuent \u00e0 des objectifs r\u00e9gionaux communs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ce mod\u00e8le r\u00e9duit \u00e9galement les co\u00fbts financiers et environnementaux li\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019acc\u00e8s aux r\u00e9cifs isol\u00e9s, permettant \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9quipe de r\u00e9pondre simultan\u00e9ment \u00e0 plusieurs questions de recherche.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-it-matters\">Pourquoi est-ce important ?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les r\u00e9cifs coralliens du monde entier, y compris ceux des Cara\u00efbes, connaissent un d\u00e9clin rapide. Pour les petits \u00c9tats insulaires comme les \u00eeles Turques-et-Ca\u00efques, les r\u00e9cifs repr\u00e9sentent non seulement des tr\u00e9sors \u00e9cologiques, mais aussi des ressources \u00e9conomiques vitales. Le suivi, les traitements, la restauration et la pr\u00e9servation g\u00e9n\u00e9tique sont des priorit\u00e9s urgentes. Ces efforts exigent du temps, de l\u2019expertise et une pr\u00e9sence dans des endroits souvent difficiles d\u2019acc\u00e8s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les croisi\u00e8res-plong\u00e9es de science citoyenne comblent cette lacune. Elles fournissent les capacit\u00e9s de terrain dont les petites organisations de conservation ont besoin tout en offrant aux plongeurs la possibilit\u00e9 de renforcer leur lien avec l\u2019oc\u00e9an de mani\u00e8re significative. Les b\u00e9n\u00e9voles ne se contentent pas d\u2019\u00eatre t\u00e9moins des changements : ils participent \u00e0 leur compr\u00e9hension et \u00e0 la recherche de solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c0 mesure que RumPowered Research \u00e9volue vers un programme annuel r\u00e9gulier, son ensemble de donn\u00e9es \u00e0 long terme gagnera encore en valeur.
