Les coraux prosp\u00e8rent dans des eaux chaudes, claires et pauvres en nutriments, tandis que le kelp affectionne les eaux froides et riches en nutriments, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement plus troubles en raison de cette abondance de nutriments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les coraux d\u00e9pendent d\u2019herbivores comme les poissons-perroquets, qui les prot\u00e8gent de la prolif\u00e9ration des algues. Le kelp, qui est lui-m\u00eame une algue, d\u00e9pend au contraire de pr\u00e9dateurs qui r\u00e9gulent les populations d\u2019herbivores, notamment les oursins. Ces deux \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes offrent aux plongeurs des environnements extraordinaires \u00e0 explorer. Mais si l\u2019on prend soin de ne pas toucher les r\u00e9cifs coralliens, \u00e9voluer dans une for\u00eat dense de kelp implique souvent de se frayer un chemin entre les longues frondes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les for\u00eats de kelp fournissent chaque ann\u00e9e des services \u00e9cosyst\u00e9miques estim\u00e9s \u00e0 quelque 500 milliards de dollars, de la production de ressources alimentaires marines \u00e0 la protection des c\u00f4tes contre les temp\u00eates. Avec les herbiers marins et les mangroves, elles contribuent \u00e9galement \u00e0 produire 20 % de notre oxyg\u00e8ne. Le terme \u00ab kelp \u00bb d\u00e9signe une trentaine d\u2019esp\u00e8ces de macroalgues \u00e0 croissance rapide. Par le pass\u00e9, leur d\u00e9clin a notamment \u00e9t\u00e9 li\u00e9 \u00e0 la rar\u00e9faction des loutres de mer, des homards et des grands poissons, victimes de la chasse et de la p\u00eache. Ces esp\u00e8ces sont pourtant essentielles \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9quilibre des for\u00eats de kelp, car elles se nourrissent des oursins et d\u2019autres herbivores qui consomment ces algues. La pollution engendr\u00e9e par l\u2019urbanisation du littoral et l\u2019exploitation du kelp sauvage ont \u00e9galement contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 leur d\u00e9clin. Le kelp est notamment r\u00e9colt\u00e9 pour en extraire l\u2019alginate, une substance pr\u00e9sente dans ses parois cellulaires et utilis\u00e9e comme \u00e9mulsifiant et liant dans l\u2019industrie alimentaire, les cosm\u00e9tiques et de nombreux autres produits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u2019exploitation du kelp sauvage contribue aujourd\u2019hui \u00e0 sa disparition dans le nord du Chili et le sud du P\u00e9rou, o\u00f9 des groupes criminels arrachent des champs entiers de kelp pour alimenter le march\u00e9 noir de l\u2019alginate export\u00e9 vers la Chine. Les \u00e9pisodes de r\u00e9chauffement ont \u00e9galement provoqu\u00e9 d\u2019importants d\u00e9clins par le pass\u00e9. Ainsi, le puissant ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne El Ni\u00f1o de 1957 a r\u00e9duit les champs de kelp de Point Loma, \u00e0 San Diego, en Californie, de 6 070 hectares \u00e0 seulement 60,7 hectares (15 000 \u00e0 150 acres).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1960, une entreprise exploitant commercialement le kelp a d\u00e9vers\u00e9 de la chaux vive sur les oursins qui avaient envahi l\u2019ancienne for\u00eat marine de Point Loma. L\u2019op\u00e9ration a d\u00e9truit les oursins, mais aussi tous les autres organismes pr\u00e9sents sur le fond. Une \u00e9tude publi\u00e9e en 2026 par des scientifiques de la National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) et d\u2019autres organismes a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 que l\u2019oc\u00e9an avait absorb\u00e9 davantage de chaleur en 2025 que jamais auparavant, entra\u00eenant un nombre record de vagues de chaleur marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En 2010, une vague de chaleur marine a touch\u00e9 la Tasmanie, au sud de l\u2019Australie, mais son impact y a \u00e9t\u00e9 relativement limit\u00e9. Depuis les ann\u00e9es 1990, le renforcement du courant est-australien avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 entra\u00een\u00e9 vers l\u2019\u00eele des eaux plus chaudes ainsi que des larves d\u2019oursins \u00e0 longues \u00e9pines, provoquant la disparition de 95 % des for\u00eats de kelp g\u00e9ant. Sur la c\u00f4te ouest de l\u2019Australie, cette m\u00eame vague de chaleur a eu des cons\u00e9quences bien plus importantes : sur 96,6 kilom\u00e8tres (60 miles) de littoral, les for\u00eats de kelp ont laiss\u00e9 place \u00e0 des tapis d\u2019algues filamenteuses. \u00c0 mesure que les conditions \u00e9voluaient d\u2019un climat temp\u00e9r\u00e9 vers un climat tropical, poissons-perroquets et jeunes coraux ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 coloniser ces nouveaux habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c0 partir de 2013, une immense vague de chaleur marine a frapp\u00e9 la c\u00f4te ouest de l\u2019Am\u00e9rique du Nord. Elle a affaibli le kelp tout en favorisant consid\u00e9rablement la propagation d\u2019une maladie bact\u00e9rienne responsable du d\u00e9p\u00e9rissement des \u00e9toiles de mer. Le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne El Ni\u00f1o de 2014 a encore aggrav\u00e9 la situation. Dans le nord de la Californie et le sud de l\u2019Oregon, les grandes et rapides \u00e9toiles de mer tournesol \u00e9taient alors les derniers pr\u00e9dateurs des oursins violets. Leur population a chut\u00e9 \u00e0 environ 1 % de son niveau ant\u00e9rieur. Une \u00e9tude men\u00e9e par des scientifiques du Monterey Bay Aquarium et financ\u00e9e en partie par la National Science Foundation a montr\u00e9 qu\u2019en l\u2019absence des \u00e9toiles de mer, les loutres de mer de la r\u00e9gion se sont rapidement mises \u00e0 consommer les oursins. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le r\u00e9chauffement des eaux a \u00e9galement contribu\u00e9 au remplacement des champs de laminaire sucr\u00e9e du sud du Maine par des tapis d\u2019algues beaucoup moins productifs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les effets du changement climatique ne sont toutefois pas les m\u00eames partout. De l\u2019autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 de l\u2019Atlantique, en Afrique du Sud, le vent dominant du sud-est souffle d\u00e9sormais plus fort et repousse plus fr\u00e9quemment les eaux de surface vers le large. Ces crustac\u00e9s d\u00e9vorent volontiers les moules, les couteaux et les oursins verts, contribuant ainsi au r\u00e9tablissement naturel du kelp sur des fonds marins d\u00e9sormais d\u00e9barrass\u00e9s de ces herbivores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plus au nord, dans l\u2019archipel du Svalbard, dans l\u2019oc\u00e9an Arctique, de vastes champs de kelp en bonne sant\u00e9, compos\u00e9s principalement de kelp ail\u00e9, ont quintupl\u00e9 le long de la c\u00f4te occidentale \u00e0 mesure que le r\u00e9chauffement des eaux r\u00e9duisait la couverture de glace. Mais l\u2019Arctique se r\u00e9chauffant trois \u00e0 quatre fois plus vite que le reste de la plan\u00e8te, les graviers, le sable et la boue provenant du recul des glaciers pourraient, dans les ann\u00e9es \u00e0 venir, ensevelir cette nouvelle zone d\u2019expansion du kelp \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle mondiale. Lors d\u2019une sortie en bateau et en plong\u00e9e avec la Bay Foundation au large de la Californie du Sud, j\u2019ai pu observer 32 hectares (80 acres) de for\u00eat de kelp restaur\u00e9e, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 il n\u2019y avait encore que des d\u00e9serts d\u2019oursins dix ans auparavant. Sur la p\u00e9ninsule d\u2019Izu, sur l\u2019\u00eele japonaise de Honshu, des blocs de b\u00e9ton contenant des spores de kelp ont permis de restaurer 809 hectares (2 000 acres) de for\u00eat marine de <em>kajime<\/em> (algue-pagaie) disparue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u2019initiative men\u00e9e par l\u2019agence sud-cor\u00e9enne des p\u00eaches constitue aujourd\u2019hui l\u2019un des exemples les plus encourageants \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle mondiale. Consciente que la disparition du kelp menace la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire du pays et son secteur de la p\u00eache, l\u2019agence investit 29 millions de dollars par an dans la restauration des for\u00eats de kelp. \u00c0 ce jour, elle a d\u00e9j\u00e0 restaur\u00e9 20 234 hectares (50 000 acres) et vise 50 586 hectares (125 000 acres) d\u2019ici 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aux A\u00e7ores, en Patagonie et ailleurs, des initiatives sont en cours pour cr\u00e9er de vastes aires marines prot\u00e9g\u00e9es afin de pr\u00e9server certaines des for\u00eats naturelles de kelp les plus saines au monde. La Kelp Forest Alliance, bas\u00e9e en Australie, et des chercheurs de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Nouvelle-Galles du Sud ont publi\u00e9, dans le num\u00e9ro de  janvier 2026 de <em>Biological Conservation<\/em> , une \u00e9tude estimant qu\u2019il faudrait 14 milliards de dollars pour prot\u00e9ger 3 millions d\u2019hectares (7,5 millions d\u2019acres) et restaurer 1 million d\u2019hectares (2,5 millions d\u2019acres) de kelp d\u2019ici 2040.
