From expedition liveaboards to offshore technical projects, divers operating beyond cellular network coverage understand that preparation, training, and redundancy are essential for safety.

Satellite communication is part of that preparation. Garmin’s inReach devices allow users to transmit an SOS signal from the surface nearly anywhere in the world.* When activated, the signal routes to the Garmin Response center, where trained emergency coordinators assess the situation and initiate rescue through local resources.

Dive emergencies, however, present unique response challenges. Symptoms can be subtle. Neurological findings may evolve. Decisions about oxygen administration, evacuation, and recompression require specialized knowledge and judgment.

To strengthen early decision-making in remote dive incidents, Divers Alert Network and Garmin have formally integrated the DAN Emergency Hotline into the inReach response pathway for DAN members.

Built on Research Collaboration

The relationship between DAN and Garmin began in 2023, when Garmin engineers were engaged in physiology modeling and product testing for new technologies. DAN’s research team provided subject-matter expertise in dive physiology and exposure modeling.

Through that collaboration, both organizations recognized that they have complementary operational capabilities. Garmin operates a global satellite-based emergency coordination system that has supported more than 10,000 rescues. DAN operates a dive-specific medical consultation and assistance infrastructure developed over 46 years of supporting divers worldwide.

The logical next step was to connect those systems.

Remote diving requires self-sufficiency. Early access to dive-medicine expertise can help inform triage and destination planning when definitive care is hours away.

Dive Emergencies Are Different

Garmin Response coordinates emergency management across a wide range of scenarios: mountaineering accidents, maritime distress, wilderness medical events, and more. The center is experienced in global search-and-rescue coordination.

Dive injuries, however, require highly specialized assessment. Symptoms of decompression illness, arterial gas embolism, immersion pulmonary edema, and other dive-related conditions often demand early dive medicine input to guide triage and evacuation planning.

The DAN Emergency Hotline is staffed by dive medicine professionals and supported by a global recompression chamber network and physician referral infrastructure built specifically for dive incidents. Prior to this collaboration, however, DAN often would not become formally involved in incidents until after the injured diver had reached a medical facility or independently contacted the hotline.

That delay meant dive medicine expertise entered the case later in the response sequence. The new integration with Garmin Response allows that expertise to be available earlier.

How It Works

DAN members who use Garmin inReach devices can include their DAN membership number in the Emergency Notes section of their inReach profile. If they activate an SOS during a dive-related emergency, Garmin Response contacts the DAN Emergency Hotline to initiate a live consultation with a DAN dive medicine professional.

Garmin Response then coordinates local rescue resources, including search-and-rescue assets and emergency medical services. DAN does not assume control of field rescue operations but instead provides specialized dive medical consultation to inform decision-making during the emergency coordination phase. Information shared between the organizations is limited to incident details, identification, and location necessary for response. Messaging transcripts are not transferred.

When the injured diver reaches a medical facility and Garmin Response formally concludes its role, the case may transition to DAN Medical and Assistance Services for continued support as appropriate, creating a clear handoff between the organizations.

The integration does not change how an SOS is initiated. It enhances what happens behind the scenes once the signal is received.

Garmin inReach devices provide satellite connectivity beyond conventional cellular networks.

Effective emergency planning begins before entering the water.

What This Means for Remote Divers

This integration is particularly relevant for divers operating in remote environments, including expedition teams, liveaboard operations, offshore technical projects, field researchers, underwater photographers, and divers working in areas with limited medical infrastructure.

In remote settings, access to recompression facilities may require air evacuation or maritime transport. Providing a dive medicine consultation early in the process to identify potential decompression illness or other dive-related pathology can influence evacuation priorities and destination planning.

Although the new integration has not yet been used in a real dive emergency, simulation exercises found that early dive medicine consultation increased operational confidence and reduced coordination time in dive-specific scenarios.

DAN Emergency Hotline’s Role

The DAN Emergency Hotline provides 24/7 access to dive medicine physicians. It supports the following services:

real-time medical consultation

assessment of dive-related symptoms

recommendations for oxygen administration and monitoring

coordination with recompression facilities

referral to physicians trained in dive medicine

Over nearly five decades, DAN has developed relationships with hyperbaric facilities worldwide and built operational expertise in managing dive emergencies across diverse geographic regions. Garmin contributes global satellite connectivity and established search-and-rescue coordination services. Their partnership brings together those capabilities without duplicating responsibilities.

Seamless Transition of Care

Continuity is one of the primary goals of the collaboration. Emergency response systems can become fragmented at transition points. Rescue agencies focus on extraction, hospitals focus on stabilization, while specialists focus on definitive management.

For DAN members using inReach in remote dive settings, the integration helps to smoothly align those phases and provide early input of dive medicine expertise to inform rescue decisions. If further coordination is required after arrival at a medical facility, DAN Assistance Services can provide continued support.

The objective is not to replace existing emergency systems but to bolster the connection between them.

Looking Forward

Remote diving continues to expand in scope and technical complexity. Expeditionary diving, offshore projects, and exploration in areas far from established medical infrastructure are increasingly common. Emergency response systems must evolve alongside those realities.

DAN’s partnership with Garmin reflects a shared commitment to improving diver safety. By connecting satellite-based emergency coordination with dive medicine consultation, the collaboration strengthens early decision-making in remote dive incidents.

For DAN members operating beyond traditional safety nets, that added layer of support is a meaningful difference when time matters.

*Active satellite subscription required.
