The 2025 Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society Annual Scientific Meeting (UHMS ASM) took place in June in Atlanta, convening global experts in aerospace, undersea, and hyperbaric medicine. Held jointly with the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA), the conference brought together professionals working across extreme environments \u2014 from the depths of the ocean to space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Legacy of Collaboration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

DAN continues to celebrate our shared history by contributing impactful presentations, shared insight, and course offerings throughout the conference. Our attending team members included Drs. Wayne Massey, Craig Cook, and Michael Gernhardt from the DAN board of directors and Drs. Jim Chimiak, Matias Nochetto, Camilo Saraiva, and Frauke Tillmans from DAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s theme, \u201cInnovation: Journey to the Future,\u201d highlighted the exciting intersections between undersea and aerospace medicine and the integration of new technologies. A standout session was the Armstrong-Hart Lecture, \u201cPressure Perils from Undersea to Outer Space,\u201d<\/em> in which Drs. Jon Clark, Mitch Garber, Michael Gernhardt, and Richard Moon discussed the physiological and operational parallels between deep diving and spaceflight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research, Readiness, and Remote Care<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As part of DAN\u2019s commitment to providing continuing medical education for physicians, Drs. Chimiak,Nochetto, and Saraiva presented during the UHMS pre-course sessions on Decompression Illness in Remote Settings. Saraiva explored the complexities surrounding medical evacuation assessments, providing case studies and communication strategies \u2014 key components for enhancing field operations and ensuring member safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drs. Nochetto, Saraiva, and Tillmans along with other DAN researchers and collaborators gave presentations on incident analysis, telemedicine in remote diving, and trends in dive-related injuries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This annual scientific meeting served as a valuable forum for collaboration across disciplines and continents, emphasizing the importance of collective progress in the science of extreme environments. DAN\u2019s involvement reinforced its commitment to advancing dive safety, emergency preparedness, medical science, and global health education. As innovations continue to expand the forefront of diving and beyond, DAN remains dedicated to supporting the professionals who make exploration \u2014 and safe return \u2014 possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
