Traveler Emergency Medical Services Ltd. (Traveler EMS) is recommended by Divers Alert Network (DAN) to provide worldwide travel assistance with customized benefits for traveler from any eligible country.

  1. Why should I enroll in a DAN World program?
  2. As Your Dive Safety Association®, DAN provides resources to keep you healthy and safe. Benefits of membership include medical evacuation coverage, travel assistance programs, dive accident coverage (varies per plan), Alert Diver magazine online, safety seminars, Worldcue Planner travel resource and more. Plus your dues help support the DAN mission to promote incident prevention, management and protection.
  3. What is Traveler EMS?
  4. Traveler Emergency Medical Services (Traveler EMS, or TEMS) is the recommended dive accident coverage provider for recreational scuba divers who live in Latin America, the Caribbean, or the U.S. protectorates.
  5. Do I need dive accident coverage if I have medical insurance?
  6. Yes. Your primary medical insurance may exclude scuba diving as a hazardous recreational activity, or it may pay only a minimal amount for chamber treatments. Many policies do not provide coverage when you are out of your region or country. DAN World and TEMS plans provide secondary coverage that may pay up to 100 percent of reasonable and customary costs of remaining eligible expenses after your other coverage pays. Our plans cover co-pays and deductibles, which alone can be more expensive than the annual enrollment fee.
  7. What is travel assistance?
  8. "Travel assistance" provides help such as good medical care and other related services to minimize the inconvenience and cost of an emergency. Depending on the plan, benefits may include the cost of emergency evacuations and certain medical expenses, most without co-pays or deductibles. Unlike insurance, assistance programs provide certain benefits directly to the member.
  9. What must I do when I need emergency assistance?
  10. Call the DAN Emergency Hotline at +1-919-684-9111 (collect calls are accepted) to arrange for medical assistance benefits through TEMS. If you become ill or injured, immediately go to the closest emergency medical facility for care and notify DAN/TEMS as soon as circumstances allow. TEMS cannot provide reimbursement for services contracted directly by the member.
  11. Will the notification requirement delay treatment?
  12. No. If emergency circumstances prevent you from giving immediate notice to DAN/TEMS, call as soon as circumstances allow. If the member fails to timely inform TEMS of the medical emergency, TEMS may reduce or deny the benefits available. TEMS must arrange and agree to all services provided.
  13. How long am I eligible for benefits?
  14. Your benefits begin as soon as DAN World/TEMS receives your completed application and payment; benefits expire after one year. Your confirmation email and travel credentials will include your enrollment expiration date. Membership renewal extends the expiration date by a full year.
  15. Will my medical bills be covered?
  16. TEMS covers medical expenses incurred as part of an emergency evacuation or medically necessary repatriation if services are arranged through TEMS. Some TEMS programs provide coverage for other medical costs such as diagnosis and treatment of a diving accident. Refer to the benefits handbook for each program for specific details.
  17. Are there any limitations for chronic or pre-existing conditions?
  18. Benefits are not available for chronic or pre-existing conditions. Refer to "Exclusions on Covered Medical Charges" in the benefits handbook.
  19. What if my trip lasts longer than 30 days?
  20. The maximum duration of any one trip is 30 consecutive days, unless approved in advance by TEMS.
  21. Will I be covered for a dive accident that occurs near where I live?
  22. There is no minimum distance from home requirement for dive accident coverage for members enrolled in the Prepared Diver, Mexico Prepared Diver, Mexico Local Diver, or Crew Coverage programs.
  23. Are my spouse and children covered?
  24. While some benefits may affect family members or traveling companions, only individuals who enroll in one of the TEMS programs will receive benefits. There is no family coverage option.
  25. Are there any age limitations?
  26. Generally, individuals must be between 18 and 70 years old. Divers younger than 18 need written parental permission. Divers older than 70 must contact DAN World to confirm they are active divers to be eligible for certain programs.
  27. Will I get a member card?
  28. Yes. When you enroll in a DAN World/TEMS program, your member card will arrive by email, or you can download it from your online account.
  29. How does emergency evacuation differ from rescue?
  30. Emergency evacuation means that a medical condition requires medically supervised transportation for the member to the nearest medical facility where appropriate medical treatment can be obtained. It does not include efforts to locate an injured person whose location is unknown or efforts to rescue someone from a remote or dangerous situation or location. Refer to "Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation" in the benefits handbook.
  31. Are there any countries where benefits are not available?
  32. Most of our programs have worldwide coverage, however DAN World/TEMS reserves the right to suspend, curtail or limit benefits in any area in the event of terrorism, rebellion, riot, military uprising, war, labor disturbances and strikes, nuclear accidents, acts of God, or refusal of the authorities in the country of assistance to permit us to fully provide services. We will endeavor to provide services to the best of our ability during any such occurrence, but conditions in some areas may make it difficult or impossible.
  33. I am a dive professional working with recreational divers. Am I eligible for coverage?
  34. TEMS programs are open to all levels of recreational divers, including recreational divemasters, scuba instructors, underwater photographers, or divers performing research (see the benefits handbooks for details). Commercial or industrial divers or professional fishermen are not eligible for coverage.
  35. Does TEMS offer professional liability coverage for dive instructors or dive guides?
  36. Not at this time.
