Looking forward
Stepping into the role of president and CEO of Divers Alert Network is both an honor and a responsibility I take seriously. For more than four decades DAN has been a trusted partner to divers around the world, providing medical guidance, emergency assistance, scientific insight, and peace of mind. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this organization and proud to serve a community united by curiosity, adventure, and a deep respect for the underwater world.
As DAN enters this next chapter, I want to share my perspective on the current state of the dive industry, where we are headed, and how DAN will continue to serve divers, professionals, and the global dive community.
The Dive Industry at an Inflection Point
Scuba diving is experiencing a meaningful period of transition. Participation is growing again, with new divers joining from increasingly diverse backgrounds and age groups. Many are drawn by not only adventure but also a desire to connect with the ocean and contribute to its protection.
The industry is also adapting to shifting travel patterns, rising operational costs, and rapid technological advances. Divers today expect greater transparency, stronger safety frameworks, and more accessible information to support good decision-making.
Throughout this evolution, DAN’s role remains clear: to safeguard divers through education, preparation, and reliable assistance. Meeting that responsibility requires us to evolve alongside the industry we serve.
Medicine, Research, and Science-Led Safety
DAN’s foundation has always been rooted in medicine and research. Our medical teams, researchers, and partner clinicians continue to expand the global understanding of how diving affects the human body and how risks can be mitigated.
Looking ahead, we will strengthen research initiatives focused on real-world dive behavior, decompression stress, rebreather use, and cardiovascular and pulmonary considerations. We will also continue investing in education programs such as the DAN–UHMS Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine continuing medical education (CME) course and the DAN Academy of Dive Medicine, building medical and safety capacity in regions where it is needed most.
Science-driven insight remains the most powerful safety tool we can offer the dive community.
Emergency Services: Ready When It Matters Most
For many divers DAN represents reassurance — the knowledge that expert help is only a call away. As global dive patterns evolve, we are modernizing our emergency response capabilities to ensure that assistance remains timely, coordinated, and effective anywhere in the world.
This effort includes strengthening provider networks, enhancing communications infrastructure, and refining evacuation coordination. Our commitment is straightforward: When divers need help, DAN will be prepared to respond.
Education, Prevention, and Empowerment
The safest diver is an informed diver. Education remains a cornerstone of DAN’s mission, from first-aid training and professional courses to medical resources and safety programs for divers at every level.
In the coming years we will continue expanding access to training, growing digital learning tools, and working with industry partners to elevate safety standards worldwide. Prevention is not just about avoiding incidents — it is about empowering divers to make informed, thoughtful decisions every time they enter the water.
Innovation in Service of the Mission
DAN’s operational strength — our insurance services, technology platforms, and global support systems — directly enables our mission. We are investing in modernizing these systems to improve responsiveness, integration, and member experience.
These efforts are not about change for its own sake. They are about ensuring that DAN remains dependable, relevant, and prepared to serve the next generation of divers.
A Global Community, A Shared Responsibility
Diving is inherently global, and safety is a shared responsibility. DAN works closely with training agencies, dive centers, manufacturers, researchers, and medical professionals to promote best practices and improve access to emergency resources.
Through collaboration we can strengthen safety culture across the industry and ensure that divers, regardless of location, benefit from consistent, science-based guidance.
Honoring the Past, Building the Future
DAN’s legacy is built on decades of leadership, dedication, and service. I am grateful for the work of those who came before and committed to carrying that legacy forward with clarity, transparency, and purpose.
The future of diving is bright. As technology advances and new explorers discover the underwater world, DAN will remain at the center — researching, educating, supporting, and responding.
Our promise is unchanged: to protect the dive community through science, service, and leadership. I look forward to working alongside our members and partners as we continue this mission — together.
