COMMUNICATION DE DAN
DAN welcomed senior leadership from the U.S. Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU) to its Durham, North Carolina, headquarters for a day focused on dive medicine, research, and exploring opportunities for closer collaboration.
Based in Panama City, Florida, NEDU is the U.S. Navy’s center for research, development, testing, and evaluation of dive and hyperbaric systems and procedures. Its work spans areas central to diver safety, including decompression physiology, oxygen toxicity, thermal protection, work of breathing, human performance, and emerging monitoring technologies.
During the visit, NEDU representatives met with leaders from across DAN’s mission departments and received a comprehensive overview of DAN’s research, medical, and assistance programs. Discussions highlighted areas where the two organizations’ capabilities are complementary, particularly in dive physiology, field data, emerging technology, operational medicine, and the translation of research into practical tools that can improve diver safety.
The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss future research questions, potential collaborative projects, and ways to strengthen connections among the military, academic, scientific, and civilian dive communities.
Working with organizations like NEDU is an important part of DAN’s mission. The visit builds on DAN Research’s longstanding work with military, academic, and scientific partners, bringing together perspectives from operational military diving, recreational diving, and technical diving to advance the science that supports safer diving for everyone.
